Face Masks in Physical Education

Teachers all over the country are getting ready to be more flexible than ever. There is so much up in the air and teachers are filled with doubts, questions and worries. One big concern we keep hearing about from PE teachers: face masks.

Our research has narrowed it down to 3 big pieces of advice for secondary education:

1) SLOWLY BUILD UP THE CARDIO

Be wary of the face masks. We can't expect students to jump back into exercise at the same rate as before. Give them more time and work your way up to more strenuous activity.

2) WORK IT INTO YOU LESSON

This is a learning opportunity. Take this chance to utilize cross-curricular teaching about the respiratory system and how it plays a role in exercise.

3) OFFER MORE WATER BREAKS

Body temperature will increase higher with face masks on. Be sure to work water breaks into lessons more frequently.
